GeneralA. 1.0 What is a spam decoy?A spam decoy is a "fake" email address that automatically forwards email sent to it to a real email address. If a spammer gains access to your decoy you can simply deactivate it so no further spam can reach you. Return to top
A. 1.1 What is the difference between a decoy email address and a real email address?A decoy can be thought of as a disposable email address. When an email message is sent to one of your decoys, the message is automatically forwarded to your real email address. Your real email address is your actual email address which you currently receive email at. Return to top
A. 1.2 Why should I use a decoy instead of my real email address? If a spammer obtains your decoy address you can simply deactivate it. Alternatively, if a spammer obtained your real email address you would soon find your inbox inundated with spam. Return to top
A. 1.3 How do I use a decoy? Each time that you need to supply an email address online, rather than supplying your real email address you would supply a decoy. You typically create a new decoy each time you are required to supply an email address. In this way, should a spammer gain hold of a decoy there is no real damage done to you-- you simply deactivate the decoy. Return to top
A. 1.4 How many decoys can I create?Mailzilla does not impose any limits on the number of decoys that you can create. Return to top
A. 1.5 How does Mailzilla work?Mailzilla users create decoys that they then supply to online services. The user never discloses of their real email address. Each time email is sent to a decoy address the message is automatically forwarded to the real email address. Mailzilla acts as a proxy to your real email address. Return to top
A. 1.6 Why should I use a decoy if I already have a spam filter? Our users have tried spam filters, some of these users still use them in conjunction with Mailzilla decoys.
The basic problem with spam filters is that, even the best filters, may flag 95% of spam properly. It's the 5%
the filter misses which is the problem. A filter may miss an obvious spam message which isn't so much of a
problem because you can simply delete the message. The larger problem is that a filter may improperly flag a
message as spam, causing you to never read it. Most people rarely, if ever, check their spam folders (some
people prefer to delete all flagged messages immediately). A filter that miscategorizes spam even once can be a
potential problem.

A. 1.7 Why are spam filters not as effective as decoys?Spammers and spam methodologies evolve. In fact, they evolve much faster than spam filters. It's an arms race, plain and simple. In addition spammers research spam filtering technology to determine methods of defeating the filters. They are notorious at exploiting weaknesses in the filters.
A decoy can be more effective becase a spammer will never gain your real address. Once a spammer has
access to your real email address the amount of spam you receive will increase dramatically (because a
spammer will resell your address over-and-over). A filter may block most of it, but there is no filter
that will do so 100% of the time. A decoy, on the other hand, prevents a spammer from ever getting
your email address. It's much simpler and more convenient to deactivate a decoy then it is to throw
out your real email address and start over.

A. 1.8 This sounds great, can I try out your service?Yes! Users can register for a free 30-day trial account. Return to top
A. 1.9 Are there any limitations to trial accounts?Currently, the only limitation is that trial accounts cannot create custom decoy addresses. Trial users are limited to decoy addresses generated by the Mailzilla service. Return to top
A. 1.10 What if I choose not to upgrade to a paid account?Your account will automatically be deactivated after 30 days. Any decoys that you have setup will no longer forward email to your real email address. If you decide to activate your account at a later date, your decoys will automatically be re-activated. That is, the decoys you create will not be deleted from our system and will never be re-used. Return to top
A. 1.11 Can a spam decoy address that is deactivated be turned back on?Yes. You can edit a decoy to activate it or deactivate it as you see fit. Decoys are never physically deleted from our system so that they will never be re-used. Return to top
A. 1.12 Can information associated with a decoy be changed?Yes. Just login to your account, and use the decoys menu to view or search for the decoy you wish to edit. Then, simply click on the appropriate decoy to edit it. Return to top
A. 1.13 Can I choose the domain name of my decoys?Currently, all decoys will be some-email-address@mailzilla.com. That is, the domain name for each decoy will be "mailzilla.com". In the future, we may offer additional domains to choose from. Return to top
A. 1.14 What forms of payment does Mailzilla accept?Upon receiving an invoice you can pay for the Mailzilla decoy service with a check or Visa/Mastercard via Paypal. Your invoice will have all of the information regarding payments. Invoices will automatically be emailed to registered users within 15 days of account expiration. Return to top
TechnicalA. 2.0 I have multiple email addresses. Do I need multiple Mailzilla accounts? No. Each Mailzilla user can have multiple email addresses. Each address can receive email from specific decoys. Additionally, decoys can also be configured to send email to multiple addresses. Return to top
A. 2.1 What operating systems does Mailzilla run on?Mailzilla is web browser-based. Our application does not physically run on your computer so Mailzilla should work with most web browsers, on all computers that support common web standards. Return to top
A. 2.2 Does my browser need to support cookies?Only if you wish to take advantage of automatic sign on (which is enabled by clicking "remember me" on the login screen). Mailzilla only stores a cookie on your computer to authenticate your login. Mailzilla does not store cookies on your computer for any other purpose. However, we do recommend enabling automatic sign-on since you can bookmark internal pages (such as the "create decoy" page). Return to top
A. 2.3 Does I need javascript turned on?Yes. To make the user experience more pleasant, Mailzilla does use some javascript. Return to top
A. 2.4 How do I know if Mailzilla will work with my browser?Although Mailzilla tries to run on all browsers, we realize that there maybe some obscure browsers that our application does not work with. You can test all functionality of our site by creating a free 30-day trial account. Return to top
A. 2.5 How do I read my email that is sent to a Mailzilla decoy?Since a decoy forwards messages to your real email address, you read email the same way that you currently do (that is, with your current email client which may be web-based or desktop-based). Return to top
A. 2.6 Can I check my email from Mailzilla via POP/POP3Mailzilla does not host your email. Email sent to one of your decoys is not stored on our system, rather, the email is forwarded directly to one or more of your real email addresses. In the future, Mailzilla may offer POP service and email hosting as value-added services. Return to top
A. 2.7 What if I wish to reply to a message sent to one of my decoys?Mailzilla offers an email form (located under the Decoys tab). This allows you to send a message from one of your decoys to any email address. This is useful, for instance, if you need to authenticate your email address for another service.
We do not recommend replying to email messages from your email client (unless you configure it to use
the decoy address as the sender and your ISP allows you to relay the message from a mailzilla.com
address). If you reply to an email that your decoy is sent from your email client your real email
address will be revealed which defeats the purpose of using decoys in the first place. Therefor,
Mailzilla recommends that you use our service to reply to all messages that your decoy is sent.
A. 2.8 What is the fastest way to create decoys? When logging in to Mailzilla ensure that the Remember Me box is checked. From the Decoys menu, select Create Decoy, Save this page to your Web browser's "favorites" or "bookmarks". Whenever you wish to create a decoy, simply refer to this saved link for instant access to the Mailzilla site. Return to top
TroubleshootingA. 3.0 I have a question that is not answered here. How can I receive technical support?Use the Contact Us page that is available on the Help menu (if you are already logged in as a Mailzilla user).
If you do not already have a Mailzilla account you can visit the Contact Us page available on our main
menu.
